Yoga Thevan

Mr. Yoga Thevan is a Chartered Management Accountant by training. He holds an MBA from Strathclyde University Graduate School of Business in United Kingdom. Yoga has served in many positions in a wide range of industries. Starting out as an Accounts Assistant in 1987 after his completing first part of CIMA, he later furthered his studies in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1992. Upon his return, he joined a Merchant Bank as an Audit Officer. Subsequently he moved to a Japanese Manufacturing company where he left the role as Head of the Finance Function of a Factory producing Air-Con Compressors and Motors in 2002 to endeavor on his own.

Few have ever had their hands in both a Bank and a Manufacturing company. Besides auditing the banking operations, he was also seconded to their Stock Broking subsidiary during his stint at the Merchant Bank. This enhanced his hands-on knowledge in the back room operations of the financial services sector. No doubt, the manufacturing industry is the most challenging arena for accountants and Yoga had proven himself right from the initial phase of starting up the finance department of a new factory, doing the rudiments of stock check and material flow planning to the setting up of a new MRP System a few years later. He is very thorough with the Business Planning process and chaired the Monthly Financial Review Meetings. During his tenure, he was also selected to attend an International Financial Management Programme in Osaka, Japan.

The good thing about Yoga is that he is multi-talented and participates in very diverse subjects. In March 1997, on behalf of CIMA, he provided AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Final Year Students with a half-day Information Management workshop to help them to prepare and answer their toughest paper in their final level. He was highly commended by the then Divisional Director, Mr Benedict Morais due to the excellent feedback. He was also called upon to host Strategic Business Review Videos for CIMA members whilst being a committee member of the Management and Professional Development committee in CIMA Malaysia during 1999-2001. Besides this, he also reviewed Exposure Drafts of accounting standards for MASB (Malaysian Accounting Standards Board) before it was converted for the accounting standard.

He gained tremendous insight and cross-functional skills from his MBA as participants came from 20 different countries and even more diverse career backgrounds. While at Strathcylde, he was part of the Student/Staff Liaisons Committee of the MBA course providing feedback in updating and reviewing the content of the MBA programme. Yoga is also a founding member of the Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers in year 2000, was the treasurer in 2003/2004 and currently a Vice-President.

The participants for his in-house and public programmes have come from fine reputed companies such as Matsushita Electric Company (M) Bhd, EP Polymer Bhd, Transocean Bhd, Baltrans Logistics, MT Picture Tubes, EAC Holdings, Exxon-Mobil (M) Bhd, SNP Panpac, BIB Insurance Brokers, Instruparts Engineering, Treffert-Inchem, Schaefer Systems International, MAS Kargo, Ayambest, Felda-Johore Bulkers and many others.
